Pharmacy had proven to be a wonderful choice for me. I liked that I could help people with their health, and I liked the respect that came with the title. The professional atmosphere was appealing—climate controlled, clean, and organized. I was proud to fill such a responsible position, and I actually enjoyed the challenge of meeting the required level of precision.
Pharmacy jobs were plentiful, and the pay was excellent. I worked at several different pharmacies over the years, including SureCo,* a national chain store where I spent nineteen wonderful years, the last twelve as the pharmacy manager. Because of the ongoing and worsening pharmacist shortage, pharmacists with experience were in high demand.
When a recruiter from another pharmacy chain invited me to work for them, I told them that though I appreciated the offer, I couldn’t take the position, because I had worked for the current store long enough to have earned four weeks of vacation, and I didn’t want to start over somewhere else with little or no vacation time. “We will match your vacation,” said the recruiter.
“I’ve been at this store a long time,” I said. “I love my customers, and I would need a really big pay increase to convince me to leave.”
“How much money are we talking about?” he asked.
I gave him a ridiculously high figure.
“Okay,” he replied, without hesitation.
My confidence rose and I said, “I would want a sign-on bonus.”
“I can offer you a ten thousand dollar sign-on bonus,” he said.
“I can’t have a lapse in my health insurance,” I said.
“Our company will pay your current insurance premiums until your new insurance kicks in,” he said. Now I was on a roll and told him that he would need to hire my technician to work with me and that she would need a lot of money and immediate insurance as well.
Again, he agreed. “My technician will need a new car,” I ventured, testing his limits. This was too much for the recruiter and he balked. But he had already agreed to much more than I had expected. I had thought I was going to be a SureCo pharmacist my entire career, but found I could be bought for the right price. I went to work for Bangles Drug.*
My former SureCo district manager tried to recruit me back. He offered me even more money and a higher year-end bonus. “Rhonda,” he said. “This is honestly the sweetest job offer I have ever given anyone. I had to go to my boss and get special permission to make you this good of an offer. Please come back!”
I turned him down and went to work for the new company where I worked as the pharmacy manager for the next seven years. During this time, I invented a little product and started a small business on the side with my sister, Bunny. I asked to decrease my hours at the pharmacy so that I could have more time to devote to our budding business. My Bangles boss told me that in order to go from working 40 hours a week to 36, I would need to step down as manager.
